It wasn't a couple of inches of snow, the problem happened because the roads turned to ice very quickly about half a day earlier than people expected.

Normally, any hint of snow leads the various school systems to close for the day, which means that students and many parents stay home. So, even with some snow and ice forming on the roads, the chance of gridlock is low.

The major school systems did not shut down, so parents went to work as usual, expecting to be home before the bad weather hit. When everyone realized that the storm was coming earlier and with a vengeance, everyone left work at once. Not a good set of circumstances.

All the urban planning in the world cannot help in a region where snow and ice are rare and weather models are fuzzy.Mike Bradyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05246080790726436836noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8474783727593106720.post-75838799057695965282014-02-24T11:45:13.588-05:002014-02-24T11:45:13.588-05:00Lovely!! The city as a shared home, with buildings instead of rooms and streets instead of hallways--this is how it's supposed to work!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8474783727593106720.post-4528494023534244772014-01-04T10:19:40.208-05:002014-01-04T10:19:40.208-05:00This model is hidden away in one of Rome's fas...This model is hidden away in one of Rome's fascist-era museums, built as part of the EUR (the original edge city), that tourists rarely visit. I went during peak travel season and was one of about ten other people in the whole museum, but seeing the model, which fills an entire large room, is worth the price of admission alone.Charlie Gardnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07317335121565650040noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8474783727593106720.post-20294777127973253982013-11-07T00:39:55.393-05:002013-11-07T00:39:55.393-05:00Amazing! Where hilly topography defied the Law of the Indies, a few irregularly-patterned cities did crop up in colonial Mexico. I'd never heard of this one, though -- thanks for posting it.Charlie Gardnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07317335121565650040noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8474783727593106720.post-47991125088779815852013-11-02T14:41:22.575-04:002013-11-02T14:41:22.575-04:00Thanks for the comment! Mexico is a treasure trove of cities with "old" urbanism influences, and it is nice to know that traditional cities aren't limited to the other side of the Atlantic.Kylehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00601033201862362491noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8474783727593106720.post-65351278657877732013-11-02T12:46:36.759-04:002013-11-02T12:46:36.759-04:00Thanks for these Mexican city tours. I love how streetview, in addition to showing the buildings themselves, provides these snapshots of everyday street life such as the woman mopping the sidewalk (an image that right away communicates the greater affinity of Mexican cities to those of southern Europe rather than the ones north of the border).

It's interesting, too, how even in the fringe suburban areas you've shown, attached buildings with little or no setback are the norm. You may notice as you continue to explore how some of the new townhouse developments are built very plainly with slight setbacks in apparent expectation that the new owners will built their own custom addition and facade into the setback area.Charlie Gardnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07317335121565650040noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8474783727593106720.post-42313499081511675472013-10-18T10:43:49.130-04:002013-10-18T10:43:49.130-04:00Thanks for the comment! Thanks for the comment!Kylehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00601033201862362491noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8474783727593106720.post-8339715173238653042013-10-16T17:32:49.964-04:002013-10-16T17:32:49.964-04:00Very insightful comments/pictures for that small b...Very insightful comments/pictures for that small but beautiful section of Wilmington...thanks!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
